currently [not] listening to
i can sing a rainbow,
nursery rhyme
seven.
i'm sorry,
it's a small thing,
but there are seven colours in the rainbow.
and pink is not one of them.
(why would it be?
you have to add white to make pink,
so it can't be a hue.
and this is why in my mind all kindergarten teachers should be fine art graduates).
what is disappointing,
then,
is when
the rainbow
mass-produced
by various liberation movements over the years
on flags and bumper stickers and postcards
for ease and convenience
gets disfigured
into a nice symmetrical sextet
so that it is easy to draw
and combine with the box in the corner
of the 50 stars,
or whatever else it gets glued to.
similarly
in the creation of slogans
and chants
we end up sticking anything together
just like the weather
but please stop selling feathers
so long as it rhymes.
the meaning becomes less important
our message becomes dilluted
even, incorrect
to ensure that it is at least memorable
or catchy
or appealing to those with a low iq.
and how we see
an iconic design
such as a two-by-two grid
with the letters
L O
V E
and even the equivalent for
HOPE
but you will never see the third,
FAITH
becuase,
oh wait,
that word has five letters in it.
oops.
this is why i like the number seven;
it's three
and three
plus another one
in the middle
to make things awkward.
try cutting a pie into seven equal slices.
you can't.
(unless you have one of these stupendous if not slightly geeky new-fangled contraptions that a friend told me about recently that works out the angles for you. the fitting of life into boxes or the resolving of all of its querks? i can't quite work out if i approve...)
things will not always work out as you want,
it will not always stay dry on tuesdays,
her smile curls up more on the left side of her face,
and there will not always be one man for every woman,
faith has five letters,
there are seven colours in the rainbow.
things were deliberately created odd.
life is not symmetrical.
why must we keep trying to 'fix' that?
