.97 promise

currently listening to
o come o come emmanuel,
15th century french franciscan nuns

somebody complains
who would write the word "rejoice"
to music in a minor key?

maybe
because sometimes it is hard to rejoice.

so said the mothers
who were weeping
who were told to celebrate
whose baby boys had been ripped up
out of their arms
infanticide for a king
and who were now wondering
why does God allow
suffering.

for zimbabwe,
for guantanamo,
for suu kyi's colleagues and for assange,
for those in the red,
for those in shame,
for the occupations,
for the occupied,
for the frightened,
for the bitter,
for the ill,
for the ill-perceived,
for the dead, and those who wished they were,
for you and me both, and us together

the promise is made.
the ransom shall be paid.

we just need to wait till morning.
like an egg that will surely hatch,
a seed that will surely sprout,
a chocolate that will surely melt.

for then the thaw shall come,
the assurance shall become reality
enabling us
like king, mandela, and others
to shout it from the rooftops
free at last
free at last
thank God almighty
we are free at last
