currently listening to
hallelujah,
leonard cohen
why is this song so powerful.
i just feel that every,
any,
performance is haunting,
touching,
percurious,
even when each note is massacred upon a broken piano and a frog-throated voice.
i don't know,
but i just wonder
if there's power
in the word.
it's a difficult question to answer
whether singing 'praise yahweh'
repeatedly
repeatedly
can be totally empty of any spiritual meaning
or what it depends upon.
whether speaking the word
any word
whether there can be innate power
in those words
regardless of if you intend there to be or not.
if you run into a concert shouting
fire
that has an impact
even when there are no flames.
just as when you pretend to someone
"i love you"
little to their knowledge,
they still have their illusion.
in these cases
the hearer does not know any better.
alternatively
it is when we ourselves
don't understand;
as in,
when i was kid coloring in my drawings
and i innocently
doodled a swastika-esque
pattern on my paper.
does that carry meaning?
what about
if the lover
hearing the word
knew the emptiness of the intentional meaning
yet wanted to believe otherwise?
